Stille Tänze

Cedric Bauer (Mannheim)

A dancer stands in the foreground, slightly hunched over, with her fingers placed on her forehead. She seems to be trying to hide within her arms in front of her body. In the background, two people are standing, with one blocking the head of the other with an outstretched arm.

In a world where words often reach a limit and cannot adequately express the complexity of our feelings, there is a language that knows no words – the language of “Stille Tänze / Silent Dances.” Rooted deep within ourselves, it allows us to communicate our innermost emotions and thoughts.

In his residence, Cedric Bauer will be exploring ways to include forms of communication such as sign language in his choreographies. He does this in a very personal way, sharing with the public his own story and perspectives as someone on the autistic spectrum.

“Stille Tänze / Silent Dances” tries to revive an art form that was believed to have been lost.  Through emotion and the power of expression, he tries to open a space that makes dance accessible.

Two dancers, each from one side, are covering the ears of a third dancer with outstretched arms. The two on the sides have their mouths open in silent screams. The middle dancer looks forward with despair in her eyes.
A dancer in the foreground has her shoulders raised and hands lifted in front of her chest, with her fingers curling inward. In the background, another dancer stands, staring into space.
Three dancers have their heads tilted back, appearing to fall in the same direction. Because they are wearing short tops, you can see lines of black tape on their stomachs and necks that resemble ink drops running up their necks and down their stomachs.
In the foreground, a dancer is standing in profile. Behind her, partially obscured, stands a second dancer, staring directly and intensely into the camera. Another dancer is standing slightly askew from the others, also looking out of the frame with a blank expression.
