“Power for the people: use your body – use your voice – make a choice” – a piece about dance as a form of protest

Public demonstration, fully embodied and choreographed protest – Radical Cheerleading was developed by queer-feminist activists in the 90s and integrates peaceful protest and direct action with theatrical elements. Taking this as an inspiration, Zufit Simon’s production subverts the codes of these well-known cheerleader choreographies that are usually performed at sport competitions to convey her own messages.

Glamour, glitter and a mix of diverse slogans are all used in this joyful and ironic alternative to militant protest forms. The choreographer and dancer Zufit Simon has gathered a diverse ensemble that delivers an intense and precise dance performance onstage that vehemently, but also with humor, poses the question of what is worth taking to the streets for.

Three dancers stand on a stage in a line, arms crossed defiantly above their heads, with determined expressions on their faces.
Five dancers cheer with pom-poms, wearing sports clothes in front of bright neon tubes that are vertically mounted on the back of the stage.
The five performers link arms back-to-back in a circle. They have their pom-poms in their hands. They are shouting something.
